Victim-Offender programs have been used for decades in the United States, Canada, and around the world. There are hundreds of these programs operating in the US serving thousands of participants, with the bulk of referrals coming from local courts. While historically minor crimes such as property were the focus of these efforts, as time goes on more and more are able to offer services in the case of more serious issues, up to and including violent crime. Our program serves both youth and adults in a diverse array of issues, crimes, and violations. We can offer this service to courts, law enforcement, schools, workplaces, and other organizations in need.
The Victim-Offender process makes it possible for victims to meet with the offenders directly in a safe, structured, and controlled setting. They are free to discuss the events of the violation, as well as its impact on them and their community. Trained Neutrals support the victim in having a conversation about their thoughts, feelings, and trauma, including the physical, mental, emotional, and financial impact tht they have suffered. They can ask questions of the offender, receive answers to help them process their trauma, and be directly involved in creating a plan for restoration and healing.
Offenders have the chance to confront the consequences of their actions and to be held accountable for making things right. They can offer their victims information, background, and perspective while working to repair the harms their actions have caused. They can take responsibility and make amends in whatever form works for both them and for the victim.
